Sri Lankan fire dancers perform “pelapaliya,” praising the goddess Paththini, a guardian deity of Sri Lanka in Sri Lankan Buddhism and Sinhalese folklore, to shower peace and prosperity to all countrymen. The culture-rich country is currently facing its worse economic crisis since it gained independence in 1948. Schools in the capital will be shut for a week to save fuel. The move would further impact children’s education, already disrupted for years due to COVID-19, according to Save the Children.
