A man totes refuse through a waste dump in the Maldives. The world’s biggest manufacturers of single-use plastic are set to increase their production capacity by 30 per cent by 2025, meaning a further 1 trillion one-liter plastic bottles and caps, 1 trillion plastic bags and 1 trillion meters of kitchen film will be produced, consumed and discarded as waste.

This member of the Awá-Guajá people, an indigenous people living the Amazon rain forest in Brazil, participated in the Indigenous Women’s March in Brasilia, the Brazilian capital, in 2019. Loggers and cattle ranchers who have been living illegally on Awá-Guajá Indian tribal land for decades are finally being evicted after the Awa pleaded for years for the preservation of their nomadic hunter-gatherer life.
