The hospital that cares for this woman and her newborn daughter is the only one in all Juba, the capital of South Sudan, which has a maternity area of only five beds. According to UNICEF, in this African country, one of the poorest in the world, only 9 percent of children are born with the assistance of a healthcare professional, and one in every 26 dies during childbirth or days after.
