Sri Lankan fire dancers perform “pelapaliya,” praising the goddess Paththini, a guardian deity of Sri Lanka in Sri Lankan Buddhism and Sinhalese folklore, to shower peace and prosperity to all countrymen. The culture-rich country is currently facing its worse economic crisis since it gained independence in 1948. Schools in the capital will be shut for a week to save fuel. The move would further impact children’s education, already disrupted for years due to COVID-19, according to Save the Children.  (Photo by Priyantha de Alwis) Photo used under CC BY

A demonstrator holds a Venezuelan flag in front of a burning barricade during a protest against President Nicolas Maduro’s government in 2014. During several crackdowns since 2014, security forces have severely injured and occasionally killed demonstrators, shooting them at point-blank range with riot-control munitions and brutally beating others who offered no resistance, according to Human Rights Watch.  (Photo by REUTERS/Jorge Silva) Photo used under CC BY
