The world‘s oceans soak up about a quarter of the CO2 that humans pump into the air each year — a powerful brake on the greenhouse effect. But a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests that CO2 regeneration may become faster as the oceans warm with changing climate, which, in turn, may reduce the deep oceans’ ability to keep carbon locked up.  (Photo by Viv Lynch) Photo used under CC BY

Rescue workers transport Jakartans during a flood in 2013. Jakarta, widely seen as the world‘s fastest sinking city, may soon no longer be Indonesia’s capital, the country’s planning minister announced this week. Indonesian Minister of National Development and Planning Bamband Brodjonegoro said newly elected President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has decided to relocate the capital, although an alternative location has yet to be determined. Local media suggests Palangkaraya, on the island of Borneo about 860 miles northeast of Jakarta, is a frontrunner, the BBC reported.  (Photo by Seika) Photo used under CC BY
