The deepening food crisis is caused mainly by the county’s fragile economy, prolonged dry spells, reduced areas of cultivation and erratic rainfall, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization said.

Since the 2016 peace deal between the left-wing guerilla group, Farc, and the government, right-wing paramilitaries and newer criminal gangs have been vying for territory in the power vacuum. A 2021 report by a Bogotá think tank claims at least 611 environmental defenders have been killed since the deal. Of these, 332 were Indigenous.
