A littered beach in northern Norway. Fisheries, aquaculture, recreational activities and global wellbeing are all negatively affected by plastic pollution, with an estimated 1-5% decline in the benefit humans derive from oceans. The resulting cost in such benefits, known as marine ecosystem value, is up to $2.5B a year, according to a study published in Marine Pollution Bulletin.  (Photo by Bo Eide) Photo used under CC BY

One-year-old Víctor Fernández plays on insulating mats on the floor of the UNICEF tents in Rumichaca, near Customs of Ecuador. At the time this photo was taken in August 2018, Victor and his mother had exhausted all the money they had brought from Venezuela for food and travel tickets, and did not know what to do next.  (Photo by ©UNICEF/ECU/2018/Arcos) Photo used under CC BY
