A young man in a favela (slum) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, one of the cities facing a high homicide rate. Most of the victims are young, black men from poor urban areas. The homicide figures have been exacerbated by antiquated laws and police procedures and the growth in organized crime.

Fatema, 35, a Rohingya Muslim who fled persecution in Myanmar, lives in Kutapalong refugee camp, the world’s largest refugee camp. She says life is difficult for her but that she and her family are receiving enough food to survive, and she feels happy to be alive.
