Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was appointed to be the next director-general of the World Trade Organization. She is the first African and the first woman to lead the body, which governs trade rules between nations. Members of the WTO have said this is a very significant moment for the WTO.

Citizens of Myanmar gather in Yangon on Feb. 6 to protest the military coup and demand the release of elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Another hundred thousand people poured on to the streets in Myanmar on Wednesday to voice their anger at the coup and reject an army claim that it has majority support.
