In 2011, crowds swarmed the streets of Tokyo, protesting against the creation of nuclear power plants. This week similar demonstrations took place across the city, with people protesting Japan’s decision to start releasing massive amounts of treated wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the ocean.  (Photo by Yuya Tamai) Photo used under CC BY

Children in the Siem Reap Province of northwestern Cambodia. Although Siem Reap has been cleared of more than 1,400 square kilometers of landmines, with nearly 4 million pieces of unexploded ordnance destroyed over the past 25 years, it remains a landmine threat; additional areas must be cleared. Thanks in large part to public awareness and alertness, land mine explosions have not killed any Cambodians so far this year.  (Photo by Adam Lai) Photo used under CC BY
