Volunteer

We usually have volunteer opportunities for the following volunteer positions. The minimum number of hours per week and minimum number of months are in parenthesis:

Front Page Editor Choose all items for the front page including stories, editorials, columns, photos and videos. Lay out the page, edit the headlines and summaries, and make sure the page meets all our criteria. Makes sure the site looks great. We prefer writing and editing ability, solid grasp of grammar, attention to detail and a good understanding and judgment of the news. You must be fully committed to accuracy, and not base your choices on your own ideology or opinions. This role does not require any computer software experience or knowledge of code. Our online software is very easy to use, though you must have a solid visual aesthetic sense. (Minimum of 15 hours a week for 7 months, 12 a week for 8 1/2 months or 10 a week for 10 months).

Marketing Research potential media outlets to cover our site, email our press releases, and keep track of coverage of our site that has occurred. Research nonprofits for us to partner with and contact them. Post news stories and interact with people at social media websites. We have an amazing website and need to get the word out about it. The places we have emailed so far have responded positively to us, and PBS’ Media Shift included us in their top 5 trends to watch. (Minimum of 6 hours a week for 7 months, 8 a week for 5 months, 12 a week for 4 months or 15 a week for 3 months).

About volunteering

We are happy to provide references from our past and present happy volunteers, some of whom work at full-time news jobs for places like NPR and IDG Publishing. You will be doing real stuff that directly impacts our front page. This is an excellent resume builder, and we are happy to give strong references to volunteers/interns who perform at a strong level.

You are welcome to apply to do two different positions at the same time, as long as you meet the minimum hours for each one. For example, you can potentially be both a marketing volunteer and editorial assistant if you do at least 11 hours total (five for marketing and six for editorial assistant).

All volunteering is via the computer – you can be anywhere in the world.

1. What position or positions are you interested in volunteering for? It is helpful to let us know of all positions you are interested in because it makes it more likely that we can bring you on board even if one area is full. If you have a preference, let us know which one you are most interested in, which is your second choice, etc.
2. If you have a resume, please include it. If not, describe your current work, two of your past positions and your education. If you have past media or journalism experience or if you have volunteered before and have references for your volunteer work, include that.
3. Why are you interested in volunteering?
4. How many hours per week can you volunteer and for how many months? We tend to favor applicants who can volunteer a strong number of hours per week and months.
