A U.S. medic checks an infant’s vital signs at a temporary medical treatment site in the Dominican Republic as part of an initiative to relieve the strain on national medical systems in the region, mainly due to a surge of cross-border migrants. Of the 133,000 migrants who are estimated to have crossed Colombia’s Darien Gap in 2021, 30,000 were children.
