Three women sift for raw gold nuggets at a mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country with some of the world’s most valuable minerals, such as copper, gold, coltan, cobalt, and diamonds. Small-scale mining in the DRC involves people of all ages, including children; laborers are obligated to work under harsh conditions, earning less than $2 per day, according to a global resource and research database.
