A young girl travels on a bus in Kenya, a country where female genital mutilation, or FMG, is illegal but where deep-rooted myths supporting the ancient ritual persist. Seen as a rite of passage in many communities, FGM also acts as a trigger for girls as young as 11 to become sexually active and married off as they are perceived as women — often resulting in child pregnancy.

More than 623,000 mainly Rohingya people have arrived in the sprawling Kutupalong refugee camp near Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, since August 2017. The Rohingya have fled violence and religious persecution in neighboring Myanmar, creating one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises.
