The US ousted the Taliban from power in Afghanistan in 2001, shortly after the 9/11 terror attacks. However, the level of violence in the country remains high. The past year has seen a surge in targeted killings of journalists, activists, and other civil society figures. The U.S. has now proposed a peace agreement between the Taliban and Afghan’s Democratic government.
