A baby is temporarily marked to verify that he received the polio vaccine in Nigeria, in January 2015. In 2016, there were only four cases of wild poliovirus in sub-Saharan Africa, all detected in Nigeria, the last polio-endemic country in Africa. According to WHO, as of 2019, Nigeria has gone three years without a case of polio, putting it on the brink of being declared free of the disease.
