The release of colored balloons is a traditional part of Indy 500 ceremonies. Just over 50 laps into In the 2017 edition of the race, the rear end of Scott Dixon’s car ripped off in a horrifying crash with Jay Howard. Dixon walked away with minor injuries; Howard was not hurt.
