People wait for the arrival of the eye of Hurricane Dean as they overlook the Caribbean Sea from Pedernales, Dominican Republic, some 200 miles west of the capital, Santo Domingo, near the Haiti border. Dean, which has claimed six lives, began sweeping past the Dominican Republic and Haiti and threatened to engulf Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.
